MYTH: Special Carpal Tunnel Patches

REALITY: It's just tape

There are a ton of these products out there. They all have a fancy name and claim to be something unique. But when you look closely, they are just a tape-like products cut into a gimmicky shape. These products usually attach to the back of the hand, and adhesive strips reach around the hand, to "stretch" specific parts of the wrist. Other products resemble a "butterfly" bandage in the palm of the hand. They are supposed to "continuously stretch" the areas around the carpal tunnel to "decompress" it.

These are sham products where savvy marketers have taken a cool idea, that doesn't work in reality, to pretend it's a great solution. In reality they've taken tape, used it incorrectly, and marked up the price to near rip off levels. Save yourself $100. If you want to try the idea, you can achieve the exact same treatment with a piece of tape and some scissors. Get some regular kinesiology tape for $15 and try it yourself. It won't help you, but it won't hurt you either.

And those claims about 90% success rates? The truth is, rest alone cures 90% of Carpal Tunnel. For the toughest 10% of cases, a more proactive healing solution like diathermy and cold therapy is required.

MYTH: Carpal Tunnel "Relief Creams" will Help

REALITY: Topical Creams are Either Ineffective or Harmful

Arnica Creams are Dangerous

They usually say "deep penetrating" or something like that on the jar. But the body has many layers of protection to stop anything from being absorbed past the skin. That's what the skin is for - to protect the rest of your body from the outside. It is impossible that a topical product can deliver active ingredients all the way to the nerves and tendons deep in the carpal tunnel of the wrist. So, in reality, they just don't work.

Your skin and underlying tissue are designed to prevent external penetration into the body. Creams rubbed into the surface get swept away just below the surface and don't get to your tendons and ligaments, let alone any part of the inner wrist. People think they work because they often contain numbing products that deaden your nerves at the surface. You feel the skin go numb. Some add mint or menthol to also provide a cooling sensation on the skin. But that's just to make you think it's doing something. Topical creams will never get to your inner wrist.

Second, with Carpal Tunnel, you don't want to numb your medial nerve. You may not enjoy the pain, but pain is your best guidance on what not to do. If you need pain relief in the moment, use cold compression. It works incredibly well. But numbing the injury means turning off your body's defense against reinjury, for hours at a time, and that's just a bad idea.

Getting past Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is hard enough. Don't be fooled by ineffective arnica and menthol creams that just numb the surface of your skin.

National Institute of Health Conclusion on Arnica:No benefit. Click here to see the report.

MYTH: Stretching and Exercise Help Heal your Injury

REALITY: You Need to Rest Your Wrist as Much as You Can

When to do Physiotherapy

Stretching and strengthening exercises are for after your healing is well underway. It's for rebuilding flexibility and strength after you are past the initial healing phase.

At first your wrist needs rest. In order to end the cycle of pain and swelling you need to give the area what it really needs: A prolonged period of rest. Not forever. But as much rest as possible for several weeks will make huge strides in healing.

Too much movement too soon in the healing process is a bad thing, as it only results in re-injury and a much longer recovery time. Stretching your tissues to any great extent puts strain on your injury that just makes the condition worse.

While you're injured, only do motions and activity that don't cause you any pain or concern. Pushing limits will not help you heal faster. Pushing limits only risks your recovery.

Certain exercises and stretches may be beneficial to rebuild your muscles after you address the underlying injury. But these should not be done until you are much further along in the healing process and the pain is long gone. If you are doing them too early you will know because your wrist will start hurting again.

You need to accept that for a short while, reducing your activity and resting as much as possible is the most important part of your healing.

Always respect the pain. Check out our Carpal Tunnel Treatment page for more information.

MYTH: Surgery Can Fix the Problem

REALITY: Surgery Should be the LAST RESORT

Surgery Bad Choice

Surgery is not actually required in order to heal most soft tissue injuries. They can't actually fix the real problem with Carpal Tunnel surgery. They don't even try.

The real problem is inflammation in the tendon sheath. Surgery doesn't reduce the swelling. Instead, they cut the transverse carpal ligament to make more room for the tendons and the nerve.

But that sheath is also holding those tendons in place and reducing movement. So cutting parts of your body away to make room can actually make the wrist less stable and lead to more problems down the line.

Check out our Carpal Tunnel Treatment page for real solutions to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Wrist surgery should be avoided if possible, and if you do go this route, pick your surgeon very carefully. Definitely, get more than one opinion. There are many risks and complications associated with surgery, including nerve damage, infection, tendon rupture, and more. There is also no guarantee that it will get rid of the problem for good.

One thing to keep in mind in this case is, that surgery does one thing really well. It makes you finally rest the wrist for an extended period of time. You will spend at least a week and likely more wearing a brace and avoiding any task that could use the area. Then you will need to go back to normal life tasks very gradually. In most cases, people could heal if they took these kinds of steps to rest without the surgery. Think about it.

MYTH: Lasers and Red Lights

REALITY: Other Options Cheaper and More Effective

Red Light Therapy for CTS

The studies on laser therapies and red light therapy look at a wide range of types of light and applications. Few of them focus on CTS specifically, and there is no conclusive evidence supporting their use for Carpal Tunnel. Sites on the web often mention studies without mentioning the type of device used.

They may say laser therapy works, but fail to mention they sell a different type of laser than used in the study. The study laser is dangerous if misused. They fail to mention that the type of laser in the study can't even be purchased by the public for safety reasons.

Most often they cite a study that focuses on a type of light therapy which is very different from the product they sell. For example, they might sell low quality red LED products while pointing to a study using high end near-infrared bulbs as supporting evidence for their product.

Sometimes dubious sites fail to mention that other therapies were used in conjunction with light therapy. One study pointed to red light therapy, but the study also included diathermy using ultrasound in the treatment sessions. Diathermy treatments are shown to work for a wide variety of soft tissue injuries. So combining the two in the studies makes it look like the light therapy is effective when it isn't.

Diathermy products like King Brand BFST can help you heal as fast as possible. Athletes and those with no time to waste use BFST to make sure they are on the shortest healing path.

Companies rely on marketing tactics and push red light products because they are very cheap to manufacture and the story is good. Don't be fooled.

MYTH: Compression Bands Help with Carpal Tunnel

REALITY: Elastic Bands and Tight Braces Will Make it Worse

Wrist Bands Hurt

There are a million companies selling bands and compression wraps for you to wear all the time. Companies like Amazon sell them because they can, not because they help. What does Amazon know about treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? Nothing. If they can sell it and make money, they sell it, and that's it.

Honestly, wearing tight elastic bands around your wrist all day long is a recipe for even worse CTS. Squeezing your tendons and your ligaments and other parts of your wrist so they rub against each other when you move is going to lead to damaged tendons and ligaments. Guaranteed. This leads to more inflammation and more pain, since now there is less room in the Carpal Tunnel and the tendons are rubbing on the medial nerve even more.

Yes, mild compression can help reduce inflammation - but only do that when you are at rest! And only do it for 15 to 30 minutes at a time. Definitely not all day long, and definitely not when you are active.

If you want support for your wrist, tape it. Tape over it, not around it, so your wrist isn't getting squeezed. Again, there is a reason you see athletes taping their wrists. This is a great way to help protect your wrist when you have to be active. But rest is the key to healing.

Yes, we can't all stop doing all things all the time. So doing everything we can to reduce possible reinjury is key. When you're going to be active, tape is a tried and true method for protecting soft tissues from reinjury. Compression bands when you are active are a recipe for disaster.

MYTH: RICE is the Best Formula to Follow

REALITY: RCCE® is the Best Formula to Follow

Most people think that RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevation - is the formula to follow when treating inflammation, swelling and pain. The truth is that ice can actually freeze your skin and numb your nerves, causing 'cold burns' and even permanent damage to your underlying tissue. Rest is absolutely a good thing. The proper solution is RCCE® - Rest, Cold, Compression & Elevation.

For Carpal Tunnel, the compression should be gentle and constant for 20 to 30 minutes at a time.

Rest, Cold, Compression, Elevation

Where ice is concerned, we don't want to apply ice - we want to apply cold that is just around freezing. Yes, you want cold - and lots of it - but not so cold that it is below the freezing point of water. ColdCure® technology was developed specifically to address the need for a cold compression device that does not freeze the skin and underlying tissue. ColdCure® gel packs pose no threat of cold burns. This makes them much safer to use than other products that use ice, which can cause the skin to freeze, leading to permanent damage.

ColdCure gel packs are completely safe to use for extended treatment durations, meaning faster relief of pain and swelling. ColdCure® technology is a huge improvement on regular ice packs.

For more information about ColdCure, see our Treatment of Carpal Tunnel.

MYTH: Cortisone Shots Will Heal Me

REALITY: Cortisone Shots Can Cause Serious Damage

Steroid Injections are Dangerous

Cortisone injections are designed to temporarily relieve pain and swelling, however, they come with a variety of risks and side effects. These include skin discoloration, allergic reaction, infection, and nerve damage. They're also associated with tendon rupture.

Cortisone shots are not designed to heal the injury. They simply mask the pain and can cause you to feel a false sense of ability, leading to a higher likelihood of re-injury. If the cortisone shot is not administered properly, there's a chance that it won't have any effect. Some people are also unable to metabolize cortisone, meaning it would not provide them with any relief.

Cortisone contributes to the thinning of tissue and an increase in the likelihood of a tendon rupture in your wrist as a result!

Please visit our Cortisone Shots page for more information on the potential dangers of cortisone.

MYTH: Wrist and Hand Massage Machines will Help

REALITY: Massaging the Area will Irritate the Already Swollen Tendons in Wrist

Raise Injured Area

Massage is a good way to relax muscles, but directly massaging an irritated and swollen area simply leads to more inflammation. Rubbing your hand might feel good but using a massage machine can really make things worse.

These machines are simply a marketing gimmick. Amazon does not know if these work for CTS. They just sell them because people buy them. Don't waste your time or money. Most importantly, don't make your pain and inflammation worse.

Massaging the wrist or hand aggressively will directly move the tendons that are inflamed and make them worse. Leading to more pain and more discomfort. Rest the area and protect the tendons in the wrist from direct work and movement as much as you can. They need a break so the healing process can get ahead of the inflammation.

MYTH: TENS Machines Stimulate Blood Flow and Help Heal

REALITY: TENS Machines Can Cause Serious Damage

Tens Machines are Dangerous

A TENS machine does not stimulate blood flow. TENS is an acronym that means Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. What a TENS machine is designed to do, is overstimulate the nerves to relieve pain - it deadens the nerves. While you want to reduce pain from your injury, using a TENS machine over an injury is highly not recommended.

Having your muscles pulse and flex uncontrolled will cause further tissue damage and slow down healing. It is an important part of injury recovery, to feel the pain, and respect the pain. Pain is going to tell you when you're potentially causing further damage.

Never mask the pain heading into any activity. TENS does NOT HEAL ANY INJURY.

Check out our Treatment of Carpal Tunnel for effective solutions.

MYTH: I have an Over-Use / Repetitive Strain Injury

REALITY: Carpal Tunnel is NOT from Over Use

Wrist Repetitive Strain

Perhaps you noticed your wrist pain for the first time when you were being active. You can easily mistakenly think that activity is the reason for the pain. But the reality is that most people who experience this have an injury or an Isometric Strain Injury.

Isometric strain is a fancy term that means you held your wrist under pressure for a long time in one position without moving it. That leads to a bone-on-bone situation and when you make the next significant motion, your wrist tendons can easily get strained. That's the exact opposite of repetitive motion!

The pressure of the constant strain often damages wrists but you don't realize it when it's happening. That's a significant cause of wrist damage. Check out our Carpal Tunnel Treatment page for solutions.

MYTH: Heating Pads Can Help My Injury Heal

REALITY: Heating Pads Don't Reach Carpal Tunnel Injuries

While using a heating pad on an injury can feel good due to the warmth, they do not provide any healing benefits for your wrist. Many sites online are marketing heating pads in place of proper treatments like BFST®.

The reality is that BFST® can heal soft tissue injuries, and heating pads can't. BFST® stimulates healthy blood flow in the area of your injury, deep inside the Carpal Tunnel. This increase in blood flow works with the synovial fluid to speed up the healing process. Heating pads can't do this. Heating pads simply bring blood to the surface of your skin, making it hot to the touch.

BFST vs Heating Pad

Unfortunately, many people buy inexpensive Chinese heating pads from American companies, like you see all over Amazon and the internet. The truth is, many of these people end up getting physically burned, not healed. There are hundreds of complaints filed with FDA every year from people who get skin burns, or burnt furniture, and house fires - even deaths - from defective heating pads that were sold as solutions to their injuries. And sadly, those only represent a small portion of the people actually getting hurt.

In the first 6 months of 2023, the FDA received almost 300 reports of injury and fires, just as a result of heating pads sold for healing people. These were company names you may know, like Sunbeam, Conair, Mighty Bliss, Walgreens, Softheat, CVS, Healthsmart, Dunlap, Yeamon, and Drive. Many of these were sold through Amazon. ALL of them were sold as heating pads to help people heal.

Get BFST® for healing, not heating pads. In 15 years, and with over 300,000 medical devices sold, King Brand products have had zero complaints filed with the FDA. Not one. And, BFST actually works.

BFST® technology far surpasses the heating pad in terms of therapeutic benefits. BFST wraps are 100% safe and heavily vetted by over 300,000 users and several regulatory bodies - many more than just FDA.

MYTH: Painkillers Are a Quick & Easy Solution at Any Time

REALITY: Only Take Painkillers During Times of Rest

Injury Treatment Without Drugs

Painkillers should never be used during times of physical activity. This is because painkillers completely block the pain signal, making you totally unaware that you're doing more damage to the injured area. Painkillers mask the pain, tricking you into thinking you're better and able to push yourself physically, when this will only result in further injury. Make sure you restrict painkillers to times when your body is at rest. Using painkillers when you're active means risking a worsening CTS, and an even longer recovery.

While painkillers are effective at relieving pain and inflammation, they are not designed to address the root cause. In situations where the underlying injury is osteoarthritis or tendonitis, some meds can help if used at the right times. That is not a CTS injury though. For more information about which meds help and when, give us a call, our treatment advisors will give you some excellent free advice. You need more than painkillers, though, if you really want to heal.

Check out our Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome page for effective ways to deal with pain.

MYTH: Once the Pain Stops, Treatment is No Longer Necessary

REALITY: Treatment Should Continue Long After the Pain Stops

Continue BFST Treatment

One of the biggest mistakes you can make during recovery is stopping treatment before your injury has finished healing. The healing process does not end once the pain stops. The healing process takes much longer than most people realize. (You can click here to understand how tissue heals.)

The key thing to remember is that long after the pain stops, your tissue is still healing. This means you need to continue doing BFST® treatments in order to complete the healing process. Doing regular BFST® treatments for several months after the pain is gone is extremely beneficial. Do a BFST® treatment prior to any physical activity, to warm up your circulatory system, your wrist, and to help avoid re-injury.

Dealing With Pain

Painkillers are BAD, Not Good

Painkillers mask the pain, causing you to continue to stress and injure your Carpal Tunnel. This will only make your condition worse. It is understandable that people need relief from the pain, so if you have to take painkillers, restrict them to times when you are off your feet. You can use painkillers to help you sleep. Using them when you are active is a recipe for permanent damage. Your choice of pain killers is important. You can give us a call to discuss which ones are best.

A ColdCure® Wrist Wrap is designed to relieve the pain associated with Carpal Tunnel. This safe and effective pain reliever is also great at bringing down swelling and inflammation. The ColdCure® Wrap is incredibly soothing and provides support and protection for your wrist while you wear it. The painkilling element is incredibly powerful and it works instantly - there's no 20 minute wait like with pills.

Carpal Tunnel Treatment Without Drugs or Pills

CTS can be extremely painful and debilitating. Painkillers such as ASA or acetaminophen are often used to treat the pain but these drugs do nothing to treat the actual condition. In fact, most painkillers are known blood thinners that can have other side effects. Cortisone injections are used in extreme cases but these too are intended to address the pain. They do not promote healing of the injury itself and they put you at a very high risk of further injury.

Blood Flow is Essential for Healing

There's no doubt about it, for healing most tissue injuries in the body, blood flow is the most critical element in rapid recovery. The blood flow brings the building blocks for new cell growth. It carries away the waste and damaged tissue. It brings antibodies to protect against infection. Your blood flow supplies the cells in your body with everything it needs and removes much of what needs to be taken away.

While your heart ensures a sufficient supply to your body as a whole, in the individual parts of your body there are a lot of factors that determine how much that area receives. Motion in local tissue can play a significant factor in blood supply. But when you are injured, that motion is less and so is that trigger to bring blood to the area. People often don't understand that motion is enough and that doesn't mean putting a heavy load on your joint. When gently move your hand back and forth with limited range of motion, that's enough to stimulate circulation. Adding the weight of your body or doing stressful exercise doesn't improve the flow significantly more than unloaded motion. The motion plus the added loads can end up resulting in reinjury. Find light gentle motions that you can do with no pain at all and do those several times each day. Just move the body part without any strain, you don't need to add more load.

Diathermy is a medical process to promote blood flow in tissue that is at rest. Diathermy is a process by which energy is sent deep into the body to stimulate blood flow in tissue far below the skin. An example of diathermy are the ultrasound treatments that people get when they go to physiotherapy. The challenge with ultrasound is that all diathermic treatments are only effective for up to 4 hours. But people go to the physio clinic once every couple of days, so they are only getting occasional treatments when their body needs several each day. Also, ultrasound is an older, more risky process that can damage subdermal tissue, so it needs to be performed by a technician - you can't do it at home.

The good news is that you have an option to ultrasound. BFST devices from King Brand are diathermic devices that people can buy to treat themselves at home. With a home diathermic device, you can treat yourself multiple times each day and significantly improve your blood flow and the healing process. And they're more powerful than ultrasound too. And safer.

An Ultrasound device is very focused and the effective area can be less than 1 square inch in the underlying tissue. That's why it needs to be constantly moved around, both to cover the whole injury and to prevent the tissue from burning. BFST devices have massive coverage areas, treating up to 70 square inches without needing to move it around. They are typically up to 10x more powerful than ultrasound too - and completely safe.

Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy (BFST®) gives your wrist the blood flow it needs to heal quickly and completely. BFST® brings extra oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the injured area - a requirement for the body to heal itself. With a King Brand® BFST® Wrist Wrap, blood flow can be stimulated in the area of injury while you are at rest. With improved blood flow and without physical activity and the risk of re-injury, you can recover from your Carpal Tunnel at a surprisingly rapid rate.

We know you will love them though because hundreds of thousands of people already use them and rave about the results.

FDA Guaranteed

The King Brand® products shown are FDA Registered medical devices. That is not all. They have also been registered with Health Canada which means they received twice as much review.

Health Canada Guaranteed

FDA and Health Canada Registration does not mean that we filled out a form to become Registered. Our medical claims are significant, and because of these claims the various agencies have looked deep into our technology.

We have submitted to FDA our proprietary research and technology to back up the claims that we make.

King Brand has participated in far more than a basic registration process. All the agencies have come to our facilities for week-long inspections to ensure that the end user is always receiving the safest, most effective medical devices we can offer. With two different countries of regulators this means our products have twice the oversight, ensuring exceptional quality and performance.

ISO-13485 Guaranteed

It is not required by the government agencies, but we are also ISO-13485 compliant and registered. This enforces medical standards that are established by the International Standards Organization for global manufacturers of medical devices. This means more on-site, week long, audits every year, ensuring our quality and products meet strict international standards.

ISO-10993 Guaranteed

Beyond what is required by any regulator, we use only the safest materials in our products. ISO-10993 regulation ensures that our products are made from higher quality materials than most baby products, including diapers. This is the highest bio-compatibility safety standard in the world. This is the highest hospital grade - think Intensive Care and Operating Rooms. Our materials go through ISO-10993 testing to ensure they are safe for you. No consumer products are produced to this high standard.

IEC-60601 Guaranteed

King Brand products are, in fact, hospital grade through and through. IEC-60601 is the International Standard for Medical Device safety from an electrical standpoint. In spite of the BFST® being an electrical device, BFST® can be used in hospital emergency rooms and operating rooms without affecting other equipment. You can use any medical device with a BFST® and neither device will know the other one is there. This is a very tough standard to meet, but we do it and you benefit.

King Brand products meet over 20 different safety and quality standards that are not required even for medical devices and FDA registration. If we think there is anything that can be done to make our products safer and more effective, we have done it. That is the approach to everything we do and that is why our company and products are so highly regarded.
