Achilles Tendonitis Stretching and Exercise
We explain the true purpose of the Achilles Tendon - it's not supposed to stretch!
Excessive Exercise can cause or prolong Achilles Tendonitis. Rest may be best to start.
We explain causes, good advice, bad advice and how to treat Achilles Injuries properly.
One Super Important Fact:
Your Achilles is not supposed to stretch.
It is a band of tissue that ties your heel bone to your calf muscle.
The muscle will stretch but the tendon is not supposed to.
Achilles Tendonitis is exactly what happens when your Achilles stretches from too much stress.
The Achilles Tendon is a thick band of tissue that transfers power from your leg to your foot, connecting your heel bone to your calf muscles.
The Achilles tendon is there to pull on your heel bone to cause your foot to flex at your ankle.
It is supposed to be like an iron rope.
You don't want your Achilles tendon to loosen, or your ankle's strength will be lost.
Stretching the Achilles is Bad. Ankle Pressure from Footwear is Worse
Your Achilles is the most heavily loaded tendon in your body.
With every step it is pulling so hard on the back of your heel that your foot flexes at the ankle and lifts your entire body on the ball of your foot.
It's not supposed to stretch one bit.
If it does stretch, it tears.
It may tear all in one spot (which we refer to as a torn Achilles), or it may get damaged over a large length of the tendon (which we refer to as Achilles Tendonitis).
Either way, the solution to an Achilles injury is absolutely not doing more of what damaged it in the first place - stretching.
If you can feel the back of your shoes on the back of your ankle, your shoes may be part of the problem.
You should never have any pressure on the back of your ankle when you are active.
This puts abrasive pressure on your Achilles and can be the cause of your issues.
Similarly, you should never wear a tight band or strap around your ankle when you are active.
There are sites that sell them as 'solutions' to Achilles injuries, but the reality is they are just going to make your situation worse!
Never have anything pressing on or squeezing around your Achilles when you are active. Never.
Stretching and Achilles Tendonitis:
That horrible pain you feel when you first start moving sometimes, is because your ankle actually did some healing.
The small tears in your Achilles started to close up and then when you took those first steps, the strain tore them all open again.
Years of evolution have taught our bodies that we need to use our feet anyway, so after the first few moments of pain, our nervous system mutes the messages and the brutal pain subsides.
We rest and we heal; we are active and we do more damage.
This is classic Achilles tendonitis.
So many people feel the initial pain but then realize if they don't go too hard they can still be active and the pain seems to largely go away.
Yes, the pain subsides, but when you get to this point you are continuing to damage your Achilles even further.
You are not alone. Millions of people have had the same issue.
The best thing you can do for your ankle is to NOT stretch and NOT do exercise. ... at least for a little while as your body gets over the hump of healing.
You may find advice on the internet that says do this stretch or that one, or exercise in this or that way, but it's all wrong.
It may be an athlete, or a naturopath, or a physiotherapist, or maybe even a doctor of some sort, but they are absolutely wrong.
Until the pain cycle goes away, your Achilles needs rest.
Don't exercise. Don't stretch. Rest your ankle as much as you can until the pain stops.
Once the pain has largely gone you can start to become more active again but at all times watch for the pain returning.
If the pain shows up at all, ease up again.
Be patient, It's not forever. Once you get on top of the condition you will get back to your old self over time.
You just need to respect your injury in the short term and let it heal.
Exercise and Achilles Injuries:
To be clear, you exercise muscles, not tendons.
Exercise can be part of recovering from an Achilles injury, but it's the second part, not the first part.
The first thing you need to do is rest your injury.
Stop exercising, stop moving as much as possible - for a short time - to allow yourself to get over the initial injury.
Depending on how bad the damage is, that rest could be a few days or a few weeks.
Your pain will be your guide. If it still hurts, you need to keep piling on the rest.
A big reduction in activity over a long period of time though, causes your muscles to get smaller - in this case your calf muscle.
This process is called 'muscle atrophy'.
If the atrophy is significant you will want to do exercises later in the healing process to rebuild the lost muscle.
This is often where physiotherapy comes in.
Physiotherapy is for the second stage of the healing process, the rebuilding process.
If you start exercising too early in the recovery process you are only going to prolong your condition or perhaps even make it worse!
How to Treat Your Achilles Properly
Since early stretching and exercise will move you backward, what can you do to help yourself heal?
There are some good options.
As you are starting to realize, Achilles Tendonitis is a case of repetitive healing and reinjury.
You take a couple steps forward then you end up going a couple steps backward.
The trick is to make the backwards steps as small as possible and the healing steps as large as possible.
The safest and most effective treatment solution for an Achilles injury is rest, along with ColdCure® and BFST® treatments.
Try to rest your affected ankle as much as possible.
Consider using crutches to keep the weight off your injured foot.
Use the ColdCure® Achilles Wrap to relieve your pain and internal inflammation.
ColdCure® can also be used to treat any flare ups of pain that occur during the healing process.
Most importantly, use the ColdCure after any significant activity to help your ankle stabilize any new injury.
This limits the size of the backward healing steps.

Even once the pain has disappeared, your Achilles may only be 20% or 30% healed.
That doesn't mean you can't restart activities.
You can increase your activity as the pain goes away, just increase it slowly and if the pain returns let up again.
Note that it is very common when your body is healing tendon injuries, particularly partial tears, that a large lump may form on the back of your ankle.
This is really a good thing.
This is your body building a special, strong, temporary tissue around the injury to try to protect it and pull the torn sections back together.
The hard lump may last for several months, but it will go away in time.

Achilles tendonitis is often caused by a one time injury - you might recall the event.
Achilles damage can also be caused by even gentle pressure on your Achilles during activity, perhaps from the back of your shoe.
Other causes are recent use of antibiotics, or osteorthritis from a lot of stress over a long period of time.
If your doctor has mentioned a 'bone spur', excess calcium in your diet or a vitamin-D deficiency could contribute to the condition.

As long as you are taping over the post painful spot then you're going to get the benefit.
We encourage you to try different applications for your Achilles to find the one that works best for you.
Also, remember to listen to what your body is telling you.
Use the pain as a guide.
If you feel the pain in a specific area of your ankle, apply the tape there.
The first couple attempts may be a learning experience, but before long, you will be an expert at taping your Achilles.

Combination Therapy is much more effective than using just one product or the other. This is because you're getting the pain and swelling relief of ColdCure®, the healing benefits of BFST®, and the protection and re-injury prevention of KB Support Tape, resulting in the absolute best treatment for your Achilles Tendonitis.
Step 1: Reduce Swelling and Inflammation
A very important part of treating your Achilles Tendonitis is to use the ColdCure® Wrap to help reduce not only the visible swelling you may see on the surface, but also the inflammation you may have and cannot see, deep down in the soft tissue.
You can use it several times a day.
Use it anytime you want pain relief and after any significant exercise of your ankle if it doesn't hurt afterward.
You should rely more heavily on ColdCure® treatments immediately after exercise because the inflammation will continue to re-develop when you are active.
Being aggressive with back to back cold treatments after exercise will give your body a chance to get ahead of the inflammation, and prepare your Achilles Tendon for the blood flow that's needed to help heal quickly.
Step 2: Heal Your Injury
Introduce your BFST® treatments at your less active times of day and before significant exercise.
Keep your swelling and inflammation under control with ColdCure® but do not use ColdCure® and BFST® close together.
Use BFST® in the morning, before bed, and after longer periods of resting your injury.
When doing your treatments, you should only feel a slight warming sensation.
At any time if it feels HOT or uncomfortable, discontinue use as you still have too much inflammation and swelling to complete a treatment.
Each BFST® Treatment will last only 20 minutes, but the increase in blood flow will last up to four hours.
Ideally your treatments should be spaced out throughout the day, so you can promote good blood flow all day long.
If you can't do 3-4 treatments a day, your two most important treatments are first thing in the morning, and right before you go to bed.
This will ensure that you have a great start to your day and you can rest well at night.
If you are planning on being active throughout the day, complete a BFST® treatment before any type of physical activity.
It can be as simple as going for a walk.
Always assess how you are feeling after your activity, as there's a chance you may need to apply your ColdCure® to treat any new inflammation generated during your activities.
The goal with your BFST® Treatments is not to increase on the levels as quickly as possible, but to condition your circulatory system to allow for the much needed increased blood flow.
Staying on the lowest level to where you feel any warmth - remember it's just a slight warmth - will be the most effective way to start healing your Achilles Tendonitis.
When can you move up to the next level?
You can move up in levels when you feel barely any warmth from the wrap at all.
This means that you've successfully conditioned your circulation and you're ready to move up.
Some people can move up in a few weeks, some people it takes a lot longer.
It just depends on how well your body adjusts to the increase in blood flow.
Step 3: Treat Flare-Ups - Timing is Important
Do a ColdCure® treatment any time you experience a pain flare-up or after any physical activity to prevent further injury and reduce swelling and inflammation.
Remember, staying on top of your inflammation will allow you to complete more BFST® treatments throughout the day.
Wait 30-45 minutes after your ColdCure® treatment before doing another BFST® treatment.
This time will allow the blood flow and body temperature to regulate again.
Refrain from using ColdCure® within the 4 hours following your 20 minute BFST® treatment, unless you notice an increase in pain during your BFST® Treatment.
ColdCure® treatments will slow down the blood flow, which isn't ideal, but sometimes necessary to relieve the swelling and inflammation generated.
The BFST® will increase your blood flow which is important for faster healing.
Step 4: Use KB Support Tape™
KB Support Tape™ is very important to help with your injury recovery.
As you move throughout the day, your skin and your tendons move with you.
Using the KB Support Tape™over your injury will make your skin less flexible - therefore protecting your injury - without restricting your range of motion.
KB Support Tape™ can be used at the same time as your BFST® and ColdCure® Treatments without any issues, but try to have your first BFST® treatment of the day without the KB Support Tape™ applied.
After your BFST® treatment has been completed, then apply the tape.
Removing the tape before the last BFST® treatment of the day will provide the best results.
Step 5: Complete The Healing Process
When you're recovering from Achilles Tendonitis, the pain ends long before you've finished healing.
In fact, the pain is usually gone once your tissue is about 20-30% healed.
The entire healing process is very complex, and takes much longer than most people realize.

This means you need to keep doing BFST® treatments in order to complete the healing process.
Doing regular BFST® treatments for several months after the pain is gone is extremely beneficial.

This will act as a warm up for your circulatory system.
You should also continue to use KB Support Tape to help protect your ankle from re-injury.
