MCL Injury Treatment Information

Professional Solutions for Healing MCL Injuries

You don't have to suffer. You don't have to wait.
  • You can reduce the pain and swelling.
  • You can heal quickly.
You simply need the right treatment.

What is the MCL?

The Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) is located on the inner side of the knee, closest to your other knee. The MCL helps you rotate, keeps your knee stable, and prevents you from extending your leg too far inward. A large amount of pressure or force put on the outside of the knee (like a direct hit) is the most common cause of an MCL injury. Though less common, you can also injure your MCL from repeated stress.

Symptoms of an MCL injury include swelling, pain, catching, locking, and stiffness of the knee joint. MCL injuries can also cause unsteadiness, depending on the severity of the injury.

Grades of MCL Tears

MCL injuries can range from a slight tear to a complete rupture. Please see the guide below to determine which Grade your MCL injury is:

Grade 1: Strain or slight tear - No loss of function

Grade 2: Partial tear - Minor loss of function

Grade 3: Complete tear - Significant loss of function

If you have a Grade 1 or Grade 2 MCL injury, you can use our ColdCure® and BFST® products to heal and feel better. If you have a Grade 3 MCL tear, you may require surgery, but you can still use our products to help speed up your recovery after surgery.

It's Important to Rest Your MCL

Knee Resting Position

It's important to understand that rest is required in the first 4-6 weeks of recovery. You shouldn't do any activities that could strain your MCL in the first 4-6 weeks. When you reach the 4-6 week mark, start with some light stretching and strengthening exercises. If you resume your regular level of activity right away you'll re-injure your MCL, and this could mean starting the recovery process all over again from the beginnning. You don't want to undo all the healing you've done. Slowly work your way back to your regular level of activity as you heal by continuing to use BFST® on a regular basis. You can use the ColdCure® Wrap to treat any flare-ups of pain and swelling you experience during the healing process.

Blood Flow is Essential for Healing

Improved Blood Flow with BFST

You don't have to wait for endless months in pain. You can heal much more quickly with the right treatment. For an MCL injury, blood flow is the most critical element in rapid recovery. Blood Flow Stimulation Therapy (BFST®) gives your MCL the blood flow it needs to heal quickly and completely.

BFST® brings extra oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the injured area - a requirement for the body to heal itself. Unfortunately, an injured MCL at rest often has restricted blood flow, which in turn limits the body's ability to heal. Physical activity will promote blood flow but all too often it also results in small but frequent re-injury, which extends your healing time and greatly increases the amount of scar tissue that develops. With a King Brand® BFST® Knee Wrap, blood flow can be stimulated in your injured MCL while you are at rest. With improved blood flow and without physical activity and the risk of re-injury, you can recover from your MCL injury at a surprisingly rapid rate.

Accelerate the Healing Process

King Brand Knee BFST Wrap

The BFST® Knee Wrap stimulates blood flow in the soft tissue deep below the skin. This increase in blood flow is what will help heal your injured MCL. The Energy Web® inside the Knee Wrap uses specially controlled EMR energy to envelop your damaged MCL. This promotion in blood flow works to accelerate the healing process by improving the circulation in the injured area. The BFST® Wrap is not a heating pad. Heating pads have very little therapeutic value since they only heat the surface of the skin. This does nothing to heal the damaged tissue below the skin. BFST® penetrates below the dermal layer to target the exact area of your injury, creating an ideal environment for healing with increased blood flow. The BFST® Knee Wrap also has 3 different levels so you can continue to increase the power of your treatments as your MCL heals. Both the Wrap and the Energy Web® are specially designed to conform to the exact shape of your knee to ensure that there is an even distribution of energy over the injured area.

Dealing With Pain

Painkillers are BAD, Not Good

Painkillers mask the pain. Without fail this causes people to overstress and re-injure their MCL. While they temporarily relieve the pain, painkillers will only make things worse in the long run. It is understandable that people need relief from the pain, so if you have to take painkillers, try to restrict them to times when you are off your feet. You can use painkillers to help you sleep. Using them when you are active is a recipe for permanent damage.

The best method for controlling pain is a ColdCure® Knee Wrap from King Brand®. The ColdCure® Knee Wrap is specifically designed to treat the pain associated with MCL injuries. They do a superior job of relieving pain and swelling. This innovative wrap is incredibly soothing and protects your MCL from further injury. The painkilling element is actually incredibly powerful and it works instantly - there's no 20 minute wait like with pills.

Metatarsalgia Treatment Without Drugs

MCL injuries can be extremely painful and debilitating. NSAIDs such as ASA, acetaminophen or ibuprofen are often used to treat the pain but these drugs do nothing to treat the actual condition. In fact, NSAIDs are known blood thinners and make the bleeding worse for fresh tissue injuries. Typical pain medications actually interfere with the healing process. Cortisone injections are used in extreme cases but these too are intended to address the pain. They do not promote healing of the injury itself and they put you at a very high risk of further injury.

Reduce Pain & Swelling

Inflamed MCL

The ColdCure® Knee Wrap uses both cold and compression to provide superior relief from the pain and swelling that comes with an MCL injury. Getting rid of the swelling and inflammation is the first step in the healing process. ColdCure® Knee gel packs contain 10x more gel than ordinary gel packs, for maximum coverage of your injury. When stored in the freezer, our XC RigiGel® packs have 3x more cooling power than ordinary gel packs. This means faster and more effective relief of your symptoms. While most products use cheap gel that moves away from your injury, our gel packs contain our unique XC RigiGel® formula. XC RigiGel® doesn't move around inside the pack - it stays in place, even under heavy pressure for long periods of time. It targets your injury for an even, consistent cold treatment, every time. XC RigiGel® also eliminates hot spots by distributing the cold energy evenly throughout the gel pack.
